The Romanian branch of German DIY retailer Hornbach has announced is dropping the commercial relations with Austria’s Holzindustrie Schweighofer, as of January 2017, a press release informs on Thursday.
This decision comes following an Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) investigation implicating the company in illegal logging and after the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) placed Schweighofer ‘s certification under probation.
The decision comes in the context of which Hornbach wants all wood materials and timber products purchased by the group to come from “sustainable forestry”.
“We have been closely monitoring the recertification process of Schweighofer and we decided to stop working with this company on the segment of wood for construction and planing wood,” Mugurel-Horia Rusu, General Manager Hornbach Romania stated.
Recently, FSC has decided to place the Schweighofer Group on probation for possible disassociation for involvement in irregularities and illegalities in its timber trade operations and in illegal logging by its Romanian forest land enterprise.
According to Hornbach, the wood from regions outside the EU should have compulsory at purchase the FSC certification. For the wood from European Union, it is applied the European law. In this case, the company accepts also other evidence about the legal and undeniable origin of the products from forests exclusively managed in a sustainable way.
