How much did foreign tourists spend in Romania this year?
The total number of foreign tourists who visited Romania in the first 9 months of this year was around 1.5 million, spending almost 4 billion lei in our country, according to the data transmitted by the INS on Friday, which represents an average of 2,578 of lei/person.
Business trips (including participation in congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions) represented the main reason for the stay spent by 50.1% of the non-resident tourists arriving in Romania, their expenses representing 55.1% of the total expenses.
Among the non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania, 49.9% traveled for a private purpose, their expenses representing 44.9% of the total expenses.
Private travel includes travel for vacations, shopping, cultural and sporting events, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities. 39.3% of non-resident tourists organized their stay by themselves, 38.3% organized their stay through a travel agency, 13.1% opted for other ways of organizing the trip, while 9.3 % organized their trip both on their own and through a travel agency.
The main means of transport used to arrive in Romania in the first nine months of 2023 was the plane, used by 74.9% of the total number of tourists, while 17.3% used their own cars, 5.7% coaches and buses, 0.8% river boats and 0.4% train and 0.9% arrived with other means of transport (rental cars, motorcycles, etc.).
In the third quarter, the total number of non-resident tourists staying in collective tourist accommodation structures was 650,300, their expenses amounting to 1.7 billion lei (on average 2,617 lei/person, meaning around EUR 500 per person).
Among the non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania in the third quarter of 2023, 46.5% traveled for business purposes, their expenses representing 49.9% of the total expenses. Of the total expenses for businesses in the third quarter of 2023, the main weight is represented by expenses for accommodation (49.7%), followed by expenses in restaurants and bars (18.8%) and those for shopping (14.1%).
Among the non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania in the third quarter of 2023, 53.5% traveled for a private purpose, their expenses representing 50.1% of the total expenses. Of the total expenses for this purpose, the main weight is represented by the expenses for accommodation (46.1%), followed by the expenses in restaurants and bars (17.2%) and those for shopping (15.4%).
The Capital city of Bucharest is Romania’s main international destination, with over 42.8% of all international arrivals. Three Transylvanian counties (Sibiu, Brașov and Cluj) and Constanța county complete the top 5 tourist destinations, which concentrate 65.0% of all international arrivals

It will not even approach 2 mil by the end of this year. This super low amount of visitors are non existent in anyway. What and were if any is the Government’s police? Zero! Shame, as this county has incredible potential.
