Hungarian Firm Invests €20M in New Mineral Wool Factory in Harghita632

A company from Hungary plans a 20 million euro investment in Harghita County, Romania, local authorities announced. It will be a mineral wool factory, to be built in the municipality of Miercurea-Ciuc.

Construction will begin this summer.

Korodi Attila, the mayor of Miercurea Ciuc, and Orban Zoltan, the director and owner of the Hungarian company Alpin Szig es Szerkezet Epitoipari SRL, which owns the company Mineral Insulation SRL in Miercurea-Ciuc, announced today that a mineral wool factory with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons will be built in the municipality. Construction of the production unit, which will create at least 70 new jobs, will begin in the summer and the factory is expected to become operational by the end of 2026.

The mayor also explained that, as part of the announced investment, the former location of the mining company will be rehabilitated.

“We are glad that a private investment is arriving in the city that, in a first phase, creates at least 70 jobs. This brings a new industrial branch to Miercurea-Ciuc and, in addition, rehabilitates, as a brownfield investment, the former location of the county mining company,” said Korodi Attila.

The term “brownfield investment” designates initiatives aimed at revitalizing an abandoned industrial location, which may be at risk of pollution.

The director of the Hungarian company, Orban Zoltan, is originally from Lueta, located in Harghita County.

He estimated that the future factory could cover the mineral wool needs that Romania needs and for which it currently has to resort to imports. “We estimate the investment value at 20 million euros, and after the construction permit is issued, we will start the works in the summer, which will last approximately one and a half years. The start of production is expected at the end of next year,” the businessman said.

The choice of location was motivated by the fact that it is located in the center of the country, and the raw materials necessary for production are available within a 100-kilometer radius.
