Agricultural crop production grew last year, compared to 2016, in cereals, legumes for grains, oily plants, sugar beet, potatoes and vegetables, according to data released on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). However, the output has fallen by more than 25 percent for fruits.
The cultivated area for grain cereals decreased by 6.9 percent, while production increased by 12.4 percent compared to the previous year, mainly due to the increase in yields per hectare (average yield per hectare). The surface cultivated with grain maize in 2017 represents 47 percent of the area cultivated with cereal grains, and the one cultivated with wheat – 39.7 percent.
For berry legumes the, production has increased almost three times, due to both the growth of the cultivated area and the yield per hectare over the previous year. For oily plants, the production increased by 29.5 percent due to both the growth of the cultivated area (+ 6.9 percent) and the yields per hectare.
In sugar beet, the production increased by 10.2 percent, mainly due to the increase of the area cultivated with (8 percent), as compared to the previous year.
Potato output also increased by 16.3 percent due to the increase in yield per hectare, although the cultivated area decreased (-7.7 percent) compared to the previous year.
Vegetable production increased by 8.1 percent due to the increase in yield per hectare, although the cultivated area decreased (-1.8 percent) compared to the previous year.
In 2017, grape production increased by 45.7 percent, as a result of the increase in yield per hectare (+ 45.7 percent).
Instead, fruit production in orchards declined by 25.6 percent, even though the area remained at the level of the previous year.
