International coffeehouse chain enters Romania

International coffeehouse chain, Esquires Coffee enters the Romanian market through franchise, with the first unit planed to open in Veranda Mall in Bucharest, in the Bucur Obor area.

Founded by Doug Williamson and Gary Buckland in Canada in 1993, the intellectual property and trademark rights for the Esquires Coffee business are now owned by New Zealand-based Cooks Global Foods Limited globally and by Retail Food Group in Australia and is now mainly focused in Canada, UK and Ireland.

According to the Romanian business media, the franchisor plans to open more than 40 cafes in Romania in the coming five years, with the second one to be inaugurated in the Capital’s Old Center.

Ziarul Financiar reported in December last year that Esquires Coffee is franchised by the Romanian entrepreneur Cristian Ştefănescu.
