Less over 1 million foreign tourists visited Romania in S1. How much they spent and on what?

In the first semester of 2016 (S1), the foreign tourists arrived in Romania spent on average RON 2,527 /person, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) reported. In Quarter II 2016, the total number of non-residents in collective tourist accommodation was 678,700 and their expenditure amounted per total RON 1.6 M. In Semester I 2016, the number of non-residents in collective tourist accommodation was 1.092.6 thousand and their expenditure amounted per total RON 2.76 M.

In Quarter II 2016, foreign tourists mainly came to Romania for business, to attend congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions (56.4% of the total number of non – resident tourists), spending 53.13% of the total expenditure.

The second reason of the non-resident tourists’ stay in Romania was the travels for particular interest (43.6% of the total number of non-resident tourists), with the holiday travel being the most common (58.5%).

The journeys for particular purpose refer to holidays, shopping, sports and cultural events, visit friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.

Of the total business expenditure, the greatest weight is represented by the accommodation expenditure (51.8%), the accommodation with breakfast included being particularly preferred (94.4%).

The expenditure of non-resident tourists in restaurants and bars was 16.2% and that for shopping 12.5%. Of the total expenditure for shopping, 36.9% represented the expenses for purchasing food and beverages, followed by expenses for purchasing presents and souvenirs 36.6%.

The expenses with car rentals counted for 50.3% of the total expenditure for transport, while the expenditure for purchasing tickets for museums, tourist attractions, zoos and botanical gardens were 15.7% of the total expenditure for recreation.

Among foreign tourists who arrived in Romania, 54.3% had organized their stay by travel agencies and 29.6% had organized their stay by themselves.

The main means of transportation used by the non-resident tourists arriving in Romania was the plane (73.3% of the total number of tourists). 14.0% of the total number of tourists used their own cars, followed by coaches and buses used by 10.1% and 2.6% used other means of transportation (train, river boats, car rentals, motorcycles etc.)

In Semester I 2016, the main reason of the non-resident tourists’ stay in Romania was: business, attend congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions (59.0% of the total number of non-resident tourists), their expenditure being 57.5% of the total expenditure.

The second reason of the non-resident tourists’ stay in Romania was the travels for particular purpose (41.0% of the total number of non-resident tourists), with 59.6% being holiday travels.

The travels for particular purpose include travels for holidays, shopping, sports and cultural events, visit friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.

Of the total business expenditure, the greatest weight is represented by the accommodation expenditure (53.0%), the accommodation with breakfast included being particularly preferred (94.1%).

The expenditure of non-resident tourists in restaurants and bars was 16.3% and that for shopping 12.6%.

Of the total expenditure for shopping, 37.2% represented the expenses for purchasing food and beverages, followed by expenses for purchasing presents and souvenirs 34.8%.

The expenses with car rentals had a weight of 56.5% of the total expenditure for transport, while the expenditure for purchasing tickets for museums, tourist attractions, zoos and botanical gardens were 22.8% of the total expenditure for recreation.

52.0 % of the foreign visitors coming to Romania in S1 had organized their stay by travel agencies and 29.4% had organized their stay by themselves.

The main means of transportation used by the non-resident tourists arriving in Romania was the plane (75.2% of the total number of tourists). 13.7% of the total number of tourists used their own cars, followed by coaches and buses used by 9.
