Most of Romanian multinationals have German, Dutch and Austrian shareholders

In 2013, there were 44,575 enterprise groups registered in Romania, with 5,248 all-resident enterprise groups and 39,327 multinational enterprise groups, reads a press release of the National Institute of Statistics on Thursday. Out of those almost 40,000 multinational companies, only 60 are domestically controlled and 39,267 are foreign-controlled.

Most of all-resident enterprise groups are made up of two or three enterprises (90 percent). Most enterprise groups in Romania operate in trade, manufacturing or construction.

In 2013, the highest shares of enterprise groups were identified in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (31%), construction (13%) and manufacturing (11%).

All-resident enterprise groups predominantly operate in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (21%), manufacturing (12%), professional, scientific and technical activities (11%) and construction (11%).

According to the share of the number of employees, most multinational enterprise groups in Romania are controlled by Germany, the Netherlands or Austria. The multinational enterprise groups controlled by legal or natural persons from Germany rank first (15.6%), those controlled by the Netherlands rank second(12.6%), and the third place is held by those controlled by Austria (11.4%).

According to the share of the number of employees in the total number of employees of foreign-controlled multinational enterprise groups, the multinational enterprise groups controlled by Germany predominantly operate in manufacturing (7.4%), wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (2.5%), and professional, scientific and technical activities (2.4%).

4.8% of the multinational enterprise groups controlled by the Netherlands operate in manufacturing, 2.3% in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and 1.5% in information and communication.

The multinational enterprise groups controlled by Austria predominantly operate in mining and quarrying (2.8%), wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (2.4%) and manufacturing (2.4%).
