An investigation sparked by Volkswagen’s emissions-rigging scandal found irregularities at 16 car brands.

Besides German brands Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, Opel and Porsche, as well as France’s Renault, German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said, quoted by news.sky.com, adding that “other manufacturers (affected) are Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Dacia, Fiat, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Nissan and Suzuki”.

As VW’s supervisory board met to approve the car maker’s 2015 accounts, a German government source revealed that around 630,000 Audi, Mercedes, Opel, Porsche and Volkswagen cars are to be recalled in Europe owing to irregularities in their emission of pollutants.

Top-the-range German maker Daimler announced it was launching an internal investigation into its emission certification process at the request of the US authorities.

And France’s biggest automaker PSA Group said its premises had been raided by the country’s anti-fraud squad as part of a government probe into emissions after “anomalies” were found in three vehicles.

European tests have found several carmakers using a legal loophole allowing them to throttle back emissions treatments under certain circumstances, ostensibly to protect engines.

Volkswagen has revealed the deepening cost of the diesel emissions scandal as concerns over irregularities found in other global car makers widened.

VW has increased the sum it has put aside for the scandal to EUR 16.2 billion (GBP 12.7 bn) – up from EUR 6.7 billion (GBP 5.2 bn) – helping it slump to an annual net loss of EUR 5.5 billion (GBP 4.3 bn) for 2015.
