Newly established foreign-owned companies fell by almost 13 pc in first 5 months

The number of newly founded companies with foreign capital in the first five months of 2016 decreased by 12.95 percent compared to the same period last year, to 2,217 companies, according to the data released by the National Trade Register Office (ONRC).

The total amount of the share capital of the 2,217 new companies stood at USD 15.4 million. Most of the companies were set up in March, 509 respectively, 17.7 percent fewer than in the same month of 2015.

At end-May, the number of companies with foreign participation in the capital of Romania was 206,683, the total value of the share capital reaching over EUR 43.2 billion.

According to ONRC data, Romania recorded in 2015 the lowest number of newly established companies with foreign capital in the past 18 years.

Thus, there were established 5,831 such companies last year, down from 6,219 units in 2014. After 1991, most companies were established in 2007, when there were over 15,000 such units. At the opposite, fewest were in 1995, meaning 3,400.

204,466 companies with foreign capital were founded during 1991 – 2015, the total subscribed share capital amounting to over EUR 42.8 billion, predominating the construction companies (27.2 percent), industry (25.9 percent) and professional services (19.3 percent). Most such companies were established in Bucharest, respectively 92,072 (total amount of share capital – EUR 21.9 billion).

Of the 204,466 companies, 41,749 are firms with Italian capital, but the Dutch companies have the higher share capital value, namely EUR 8.4 billion, although there are about 4,600 companies.
