BNR: Balance of payments posted a EUR 312m deficit in five months

In January – May 2015, the balance-of-payments current account posted a deficit of EUR 312 million, 26.4 percent down from the same year-ago period, amid the widening of the secondary income surplus (by EUR 431 million) and the increase in the services surplus (by EUR 52 million), the National Bank of Romania (BNR) informs.
Non-residents’ direct investment in Romania (estimates) totalled EUR 1,287 million, of which equity (including estimated net profit) amounted to EUR 650 million and intercompany lending to EUR 637 million (net).
Long-term external debt at end-May 2015 stood at EUR 71,473 million (78.7 percent of total external debt), down 5.6 percent from end-2014.
Short-term external debt at end-May 2015 amounted to EUR 19,319 million (21.3 percent of total external debt), up 4 percent from end-2014.
In the period under review, the total external debt declined by EUR 3,510 million.
Long-term external debt service ratio ran at 42.2 percent in January-May 2015 against 37.3 percent in 2014. At end-May 2015, goods and services import cover stood at 6.5 months, as compared with 6.9 months at end-2014.
