Competition Council analyses Billa Romania takeover

The Competition Council analyses the economic concentration by which the Carrefour group takes control of the Billa stores, the retail operations in Romania of the Rewe Group, the authority has announced on Wednesday.
The German Rewe Group will maintain its other retail activities in Romania, focusing on the network of discounter stores.
The transaction was initially notified to the European Commission, but the Competition Council in Romania was considered the more appropriate authority to conduct a detailed analysis of the markets where Carrefour strengthens its position following the takeover of Billa stores.

France’s Carrefour has signed an agreement with German retail group Rewe for the acquisition of Billa Romania supermarket chain in December last year.

Spread throughout Romania, the 86 Billa Romania supermarkets represent a total sales area of 83,000 square meters, boosting Carrefour’s position in the market. REWE Group, Billa’s owner, remains in Romania with Penny Market discount stores network.

Carrefour has previously acquired other Billa stores, in Italy in 2014.
