The European Commission is ready to support Romania and to supply any additional technical assistance necessary to combat the African swine fever, an EC spokesman said on Tuesday.

He stressed that the EC is following closely the development of the African swine fever in Romania, adding that exceptional measures are needed, such as consolidated surveillance and the allotment of adequate human resources, in order to ensure the management of the current outbreaks and to isolate the fever, digi24.ro informs.

The spokesman said that it all depends on the correct implementation of the EU legislation and the measures to fight the African swine fever.

The number of African swine fever outbreaks has reached 578 in 98 localities in 8 counties (Satu-Mare, Bihor, Sălaj, Tulcea, Brăila, Constanţa, Ialomiţa şi Galaţi), according to ANSVSA officials. More than 78,000 pigs from industrial farms and households have been slaughtered so far, in order to fight the disease.

Order of Agriculture Minister, Petre Daea: Contaminated crops with swine fever virus will be burned

The agricultural crops that have been contaminated by swine fever virus will be burned or disinfected by landowners or land users to reduce the risk of spreading the disease, the Agriculture Minister Petre Daea decided in an order, agrointel.ro reports.

According to the order, in the areas affected by the disease, the surfaces will be checked before harvesting and the areas affected by the wild boars will be isolated by ploughed strips and the plants neutralized. It is forbidden to harvest plants or transport them to other areas. Disinfecting agricultural machinery, combines, tractors or equipment is binding.

Failure to comply with the provisions of the order by landowners or land users shall be sanctioned in accordance with the legal provisions, the order reads.

The normative act was issued at the end of last week and reported earlier this week to the agricultural directorates.
