More than 38 pc of Romanian roads – gravel and dirt roads

Almost 40% of the Romanian public roads are gravel roads and dirt roads, only 35.4% being modernized roads, the rest of the infrastructure being made up of asphalt roads with light cover, the National Statistics Institute (INS) informed on Friday. The data are valid for December 31, 2014.
By the end of last year, public roads totalled 85,362 km, of which 17,272 km (20.2%) were national roads, 35,505 km (41.6%) county roads and 32,585 km (38.2%) communal roads.
“In terms of the type of covering the public road network, the structure was: 30,240 km (35.4%) upgraded roads (90.5% rate of updated roads with heavy-duty and medium asphalt pavements), 22,088 km (25.9%) roads with light asphalt pavement and 33,034 km (38.7%) of dirt and gravel roads. With regard to the technical condition of public roads, 44.4% of the lengths of modernized roads and 52% of the length of roads with light pavement have exceeded the service life,” reads the INS release.
Of all national roads, 6,194 kilometres (35.9%) were European roads, 683 km (6.1% more than in 2013, i.e. 39 km) were motorways, 276 km (1.6%) were three-lane roads, 1,673 kilometres (9.7%) were 4-lane roads and 22 km (0.1%) were 6-lane roads.
County roads were, in a ratio of 44.2%, roads with light asphalt pavement; communal roads were 46.3% gravel roads.
On the other hand, the railway lines of public use in operation totalled 10,777 km.
Late last year, the length of railway electrified lines in service was 4,029 km, representing 37.4% of the railway network in operation.
