More than half of Romanian employees work in the evening, at night or on weekends
More than half of the total employed population – 52.7% works in atypical periods, such as in the evening, at night or during the weekends, Diana Popa, expert with the National Institute of Statistics (INS) said on Thursday when presenting the results of a survey conducted on the Romanian labour market.
“Atypical work refers to activities carried out in the evening, at night, on Saturday, on Sundays or in shifts. We have to say that this question is one with a multiple answer, so a person can fit into more than one category, and also the question refers to the last four weeks preceding the interview, so it is not necessary for people to perform atypical work on regular basis,” Popa said during a debate on the working time.
Thus, 52.7% of the respondents (of the total occupied population) said they had worked in atypical periods of the day, such as in the evening, at night, on Saturday or Sunday, and 25.8% said they had worked in shifts.
“By category, almost 50% of the total employed population said they work on Saturday and 12% work at night, but I mentioned that a person can fit into several categories, i.e. he can work both on Saturday and at night,” Popa said.
Regarding the usual work schedule, the average in Romania is 39.8 hours per week. In agriculture the average is of only 35.6 hours, while employees in industry, construction and services work more than the statistical average.
