Three quarters of the cars sold in Romania are used cars
The total number of motor vehicles in Romania has grown during 2008-2014 by 21% to 4.9 million vehicles, but most of this growth came from imported used cars, shows an analysis of PwC Romania.
Currently, three quarters of the motor cars sold in Romania are used.
In such circumstances, the average age of the national fleet has grown from 7.7 years in 2008 to 12.9 years in 2014, by 4.6 years older than the average age of the car fleet in the European Union.
The share of vehicles newer than 2 years has decreased from 22% of the total fleet to only 4%.
This is due to the increasing age of used motor vehicles registered. For example, the average age of second hand vehicles registered in Romania is more than 10 years.
“The average fleet age will increase to 14 years by 2020, resulting in increased pollution, but also increasing the traffic safety issues,” warned Daniel Anghel, Partner, Tax Advisory Services with PwC Romania, one of the authors of the analysis.
The annual rate of fleet renewal is 1.4% in Romania, the European average of 5.1%.
