Over EUR 8.4 million will be invested in a balneary and climatic resort with health, rehabilitation, beauty and leisure centers in Ocna Mures (Alba County), a city that was Romania’s tourist map for decades for its salted baths, the glorious moment being reached in 1980, local media informs.

The balneary and climatic resort is set to receive the tourists in 2020 and the works will start in a few months, after the councilors of Alba county approved on Thursday two draft decisions on the association between County Council and Ocna Mures City Hall in order to jointly achieve this spa resort.

This project will also have fitness room, restaurant, several rooms for therapeutic treatments, pools and playgrounds for children.

The new resort in Ocna Mures will cover an area of 10.656 square meters, serving both city residents, adjacent area, and potential tourists.

Silviu Vinteler, Mayor of Ocna Mures, said that this project is a start for the city’s economic recovery.

Ocna Mures has a chlorosodic products plant, a salt extraction plant and a spa which uses the salty water from the former mines. The town is situated next to a large deposit of salt, mined in the past until the ceiling of the mines collapsed from water infiltration in 1978.

Ocna Mures Baths were for decades the main attraction of the city, but also a treatment place for those suffering from rheumatic and gynecological affections. Statistics show that in 1980, 7,500-8,000 people arrived here each year for therapeutic treatments.
