PepsiCo to resume some soft drink production in Greece from Romania
PepsiCo Hellas, the distributor of PepsiCo brands in the Greek market, plans to create local partnerships to bring back some of the production of soft drinks now imported from Romania, Inga Dengel, general manager for Greece and Cyprus of PepsiCO, told Greek media. The reason would be related to the costs and difficulties of transportation.
Pepsico’s manager for Greece and Cyprus told the Greek publication Capital that the group plans to bring back some of the production of some brands, including Pepsi, to the Greek market by developing partnerships with companies that would like to carry out production and bottling on its behalf.
Part of the strategy thus consists in the production of soft drinks in PET plastic packaging at the NU Aqua factory in Loutraki. Also, part of the production of soft drinks in aluminum cans will be carried out either in cooperation with the company EPSA or in cooperation with another plant in Greece that has the necessary production capacity to meet PepsiCo’s needs. The production of the new products in Greece will start from December.
PepsiCo’s move is due to changes in market conditions post pandemic and following the war in Ukraine. Basically, now it has become much too expensive and much too difficult to import from outside Greece, local production thus becoming more advantageous. “Covid came, the war in Ukraine and a little later in Israel. Thus, even if you pay the most expensive transport, there are no drivers who want to make routes to transport the products”, said the manager of PepsiCO, according to which the group’s goal is to double its activity in Greece.
