Piata Sudului passage, at the second launch

Piata Sudului passage was inaugurated on Sunday by the mayor of Bucharest, Gabriela Firea, and District 4 Mayor, Daniel Baluta. This is the second launch after the one held on end-April.

According to Firea, the constructor promised that the “tram area” will be completed by September 10, which means the third ‘official inauguration’. She also stressed that she took over this investment objective in a physical execution stage of 60 percent.

“The contract was signed in 2014, with deadline for 2015. Unfortunately, due to design errors and poor management, this project was blocked. Its benefits are very high, especially for this area of the capital. Practically, it streamlines traffic in the southern area of Bucharest. It also increases traffic speed and drops by 70 percent the waiting time in traffic”, Firea added.

She explained that the total value of the project was originally calculated at EUR 19.5 million, of which 90 percent should have been European funds.

“Unfortunately, due to design errors and poor management, the City Hall lost the funding in 2015 and only 15 percent of EU funds were used for this project, the rest being municipality support,” Firea also said.

Bucharest mayor said that this year 40 percent of the project was completed, saving EUR 1.2 million.

Firea pointed out that, in addition to the 4-lane Piata Sudului passage, there were also build 8 lifts for elderly and disabled people and 4 escalators.
