The hybrid and electric vehicles are slowly becoming popular among Romanians. According to the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA), green car sales reached 1,237 units in the first seven months of the year, almost tripled (+ 210.48 percent) as compared to the same period of 2016.
During January – July 2017, the share of green cars in total sales increased by 1.8 percent year-on-year locally. Plug-in cars sales increased by about 180 percent, while hybrid cars sales recorded an increase of over 215 percent.
In July, 291 electric and hybrid cars were sold, up by 9.81 percent month-on-month, when 265 cars were sold.
BMW tops the ranking of the most traded plug-in cars brands in the first seven months of the year with 46 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz (40 units), Renault (18), Audi, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen (9 units each) and Porsche (5).
At the same time, most hybrid cars sold on the local market in the first seven months were Toyota (1,019 units), followed by Lexus (88), Kia (9), Hyundai (3) and Mercedes-Benz (2). Official statistics show that last year, the number of new hybrid and electric cars sold in Romania reached 1,183 units, up 138 percent from 2015, of which 167 are electric cars.
