Romania is now Executive Council member of UNWTO

Romania joined the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), along with Lithuania, Greece, Russia and Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Tourism announced on Monday, a press release informs.

Several countries have run for five positions in the Executive Council, and Romania received 22 votes in favor, more than half of the votes cast.

”Romania strengthens its global position in tourism. (…) Starting today, Romania has the great chance to take part in all UNWTO decisions on the tourism development worldwide and to actively engage in the dynamics of the Executive Council,” the release reads.

Romania’s candidacy was supported by a delegation headed by Tourism Minister Mircea Dobre in Chengdu (China) as part of the 22nd edition of the World Tourism Organization’s General Assembly.

As part of the United Nations, the UNWTO supports many of the United Nation’s programs and is one of the largest global tourism organizations that advises member states on how to develop and implement tourism policies. The organization’s mission is to, “drive economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offer leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide,” according to its website.

UNWTO’s membership includes 157 countries, six associate members and 500 affiliate members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities.
