Beer producer Martens in Galati, controlled by Belgian company Bockhold BV, plans this year to reach Middle East with its flavored beers without alcohol, company’s officials said for local media.

Last year the company’s products have been successful on the markets of Bulgaria and Italy, after previously reached to the US and Egypt.

Company management wants to get to the Muslim market, a highly competitive and risky area, but with a very high consumption of beer without alcohol, with different flavors.

According to Vasile Joantă, general manager of Galati-based Martens, the company obtained all the necessary religious approvals for these exports, considering that beer means alcohol, which is a forbidden product in those places. “Our Driver beer has zero percent alcohol and is certified by specialized institutes,”, Martens official said, adding that Driver beer sales reached to even 9,000 hectoliters.

About 80 percent of beer production in Galati goes to domestic retail market – Kaufland, Rewe (Billa, Penny Market) and Selgros. As of last summer, when the company completed the investment in a new packaging line at dose, Kastel beer made by Martens began to be marketed in the hypermarket chains in Europe.

Martens’ Joanta estimates that the beer market this year will reach to about 18 million hectoliters compared to almost 15 million hectoliters in 2014 (according to the Brewers’ association in Romania forecasts).
