Romanian meat processor Angst takes over SALSI salami maker

The Angst group, one of the main players in the meat industry, led by Sorin Minea, the president of Employers Federation in the Food Industry (Romalimenta), took over the majority stake in the Sinaia dry-crude products plant, SALSI, holding 88 percent of the shares, a press release informs.

SALSI, the oldest dry-crude products factory in Romania, dating from 1920, owns almost 15 percent of Sibiu salami’s market share, with about 575 employees.

The plant was already part of the Angst group, which held only 34.1 percent of the shares, the rest of the shares being controlled by a Swiss-registered company, Metzgerei Angst (27.1 percent) and Swiss Urs Angst (26.9 percent).

Sibiu salami sales grew by 10 percent in 2016 due to the fact that the product has been registered as a product of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) at European level that year.

The protected area for Sibiu salami is represented by the counties of Bacau, Brasov, Prahova, Sibiu, Calarasi, Covasna, Ilfov and Bucharest.

About eight months after obtaining the certificate for the Sibiu salami, the sausage and salami producers stated that this certification contributed both to the increase in sales and notoriety.

Another benefit of the producers certified to produce Sibiu salami is that they have a European funding of EUR 2 million to promote this product outside the country in the next three years.

Agricola Bacau, Aldis, H&E Reinert, SALSI and Scandia Romania manufacture 90 percent of Sibiu salami production in Romania.
