Domestic wine production decreased by 8 percent last year to about 3.3 million hectoliters, International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) revised data show.
The new figures contrast starkly with those presented in October, when OIV estimated a strong recovery of wine production in Romania, more than 4.8 million hectoliters.
According to revised data, 2016 was the third consecutive year of decline on the Romanian wine market. The decline of 8 percent (0.3 million hectoliters) from a volume of more than 3.5 million hectoliters in 2015, is far from the huge increase of 37 percent initially projected by the international organization.
In terms of wine consumption in Romania, this decreased by 0.2 million hectoliters last year (-4.5 percent), to an estimated level of about 3.8 million hectoliters. Romania ranks 14th globally after the quantity of consumed wine, before Serbia, Austria or Hungary, but after the US, France, Italy or Germany.
There was less wine produced around the world last year according to OIV. Global production was down by 3.2 percent from the previous year with bad weather a major factor. The total was 267 million hectolitres.
Italy maintained its position as the world’s largest wine producer with France in second place, Spain – where production edged up – was third and the United States fourth.
The world wine trade saw a slight reduction in volume down by 1.2 percent, but there was a 2.0 percent increase in value with sales totaling EUR 29 billion. Wine consumption rose slightly but is still well below the levels seen before the 2008 financial crisis.
The US topped the consumption league table, for the sixth year running, followed by France, Italy and Germany, though the Chinese drinking are more and were in fifth place.
