Romania’s net coal production stood at almost 4.30 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first eleven months of 2017, up by 12.3 percent (469,900 toe) than in the same period in 2016, according to the data centralized by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
In the period under review, Romania imported 496,800 net coal toe, up by 2,400 toe (0.5 percent) compared to the imported quantity in January-November 2016.
Romania’s Energy Strategy 2015-2035 draft reads that the total production capacity of lignite amounts to some 12.6 billion tonnes, located in the ‘Oltenia’ Minier Basin. Deposits in operation totaled 986 million tonnes. The coal reserves, concentrated in the carboniferous basin of the Jiu Valley, amount to 2.2 billion tonnes, of which 592 million tonnes are in the exploited perimeters.
