Romania’s deficit in food trade, up to EUR 916 M at 5 mo. Wheat dominates exports

Romania’s deficit in agri-food trade reached EUR 916 million by the end of May, up 60.8 percent compared to the same period in 2016, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development data.

However, National Institute of Statistics (INS) shows a higher deficit in Romania’s agro-food trade in the first five months of this year, of about EUR 989.3 million.

Back to MADR data, the statistics show the exports grew by 6.9 percent in the first five months of the year, up to EUR 2.046 billion, while imports increased by 19.3 percent, totaling EUR 2.962 billion.

Wheat is still the main exported product with a total of EUR 354 million for 2 million tons and a EUR 8.8 million increase in value in the first five months of the year, compared to the similar period of 2016.

As for the imports, MADR data show that there was a significant increase in pigmeat during January-May period, an increase of EUR 57.9 million, and thus it remains the main imported product, with a total of EUR 153.9 million for 77,600 tons.

EU continues to be Romania’s main partner in agri-food trade, the deliveries accounting for 58.6 percent of total exports, and the purchases in the Member States accounted for 80.1 percent of total imports.
