Romania exported during January 1 – October 31, 2015, 8,992 tonnes of honey amounting to EUR 34.6 million, down by 5.3 percent compared to the same period in 2014 – EUR 34.57 million, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development data show.
On the other hand, imports of honey in the first 10 months of 2015 reached to EUR 4.74 million, for 2,081.6 tons, while in the same period of 2014 amounted to EUR 5.13 million for 2,066.1 tons of honey brought from the intra and non-EU markets.
According to the Beekeepers Association in Romania (ACAR), honey production in 2015 has decreased on average by 30 percent compared to an average annual output of 22,000 tons because of drought and depopulation of bee families.
Statistics show that Romanians consume on average 450-500 grams of honey per year per capita, a consumption increasing as against 10 years ago, but they are still at the end of the top in Europe compared to 2 kg consumed in Germany or 1.5 kg in Belgium and in the Netherlands.
Currently Romania ranks 4th in Europe in terms of honey production after Germany, France and Hungary.
