Energy is one of the two engines of growth for Romania, agriculture is the second. Along with Denmark and Estonia, Romania is the third most energy independent country in the European Union, according to specialists.

Romania is expected to achieve energy independence by the end of the decade, due to shale gas and alternative energy sources like wind and nuclear power. But until then, as a Ukraine neighbor, Romania has found itself in recent months close to Europe’s latest energy and political crisis, a crisis that threatens to disrupt Europe’s gas supply and throw the European Union into economic turmoil.

The Russian group Gazprom reduced Wednesday again the volumes of gas delivered to some domestic companies, without offering any explanation, this time by 13 percent compared to the level planned, the Department for Energy announced.
“There is no concern, we should start to get used to such situations generated by Gazprom. Romania’s import volumes are very low and (the country) is well prepared to face this winter without people to suffer,” minister delegated for Energy, Razvan Nicolescu said in statement. This situation comes after Razvan Nicolescu discussed in an official meeting with the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Romania, Oleg Malginov, that took place on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Department for Energy.
With this occasion, as a conclusion, the minister delegated for Energy said that Romania has no guarantees that Russia will not reduce the gas deliveries. The Russian group Gazprom reduced, in the first part of September the volumes of gas delivered.
