Romania’s Wheat Import from Ukraine Hits 1M Tons in Commercial Year
Since the beginning of this commercial year that started in July, Romania has been the second largest market for wheat from Ukraine, after Spain. Traders brought one million tons of wheat into the country, out of the up to 10.3 million tons exported by Ukraine.
Ukraine has so far (February 16) exported 26.47 million tons of grain in the 2024/2024 marketing year (which began on July 1), including 2.8 million tons in February and 1.67 million tons in last week, according to the data of the State Customs Service of the country cited by Agricensus.
This puts the current marketing year’s exports about 11% below the 29.9 million tonnes delivered last year. Also, exports in February were 6% below those of February last year. From this total amount of grain, the volume of Ukrainian corn exported since July 2023 reached 14.59 million tons (990,000 tons in the last week and 1.6 million tons in February) being about 15% lower than from last year. The largest amount went from the beginning of the marketing season to Spain (3.3 million tons), followed by Egypt (1.8 million tons), China (1.8 million tons), Italy (1.65 million tons) and Netherlands (1.15 million tons).
As for the volume of Ukrainian wheat exports, it has totaled 10.3 million tons since the beginning of the commercial year, being 4% lower than last year. Spain (3.3 million tons), Romania (1 million tons), Egypt (788,700 tons), Pakistan (696,200 tons) and Turkey (615,100 tons) were the top five importers of Ukrainian wheat since the beginning of the season.
According to February data only, 1.1 million tons were exported then, 14% more than the 975,000 tons delivered across borders in the same period last year. Pakistan was the main importer of Ukrainian wheat in February with 256,161 tonnes, followed closely by Pakistan with 242,610 tonnes, Egypt with 174,102 tonnes, Tunisia with 89,617 tonnes and Turkey with 70,526 tonnes.
Barley exports totaled 1.5 million tons since the beginning of the new marketing year, 22% less in annual terms. 126,000t of barley was recorded in February alone, 23% less than in February 2023. The main importers of Ukrainian barley in February were China with 67,980 tons, Algeria with 29,638 tons, Israel with 9,900 tons and Turkey with 9,710 tons.
Since the start of the marketing season, China and Spain accounted for more than half of total exports, with approximately 400,000 mt each, followed by Romania with 198,500 mt.
