Romgaz, the national gas producer, has launched the tender for the IT platform required for contracting and invoicing gas and electricity for household customers, which must support an “unlimited” number of consumption points. Based on the terms of the procedure, Romgaz could make the first gas and electricity offers for households at the beginning of the summer.

The deadline for submitting offers is February 10 and it is estimated that the award will be made during May of this year. After signing the contract, the winner will have to deliver the necessary hardware infrastructure within 45 days at most and put the IT platform into operation after another 45 – a total of 90 days, which means that the platform could be activated in August or September 2025.

“Natural gas and electricity information platform” is the name of the contract put up for auction by Romgaz in the electronic public procurement system on January 6, according to data from the platform.

The estimated value of the contract is 8.58 million lei. It is practically the essential step that Romgaz is taking to finally enter the segment of gas supply to the population, which has been talked about for more than four years. Romgaz is a natural gas producer (almost five billion cubic meters per year), the largest in Romania, but it is also an electricity producer, operating the old power plant in Iernut, an activity that will increase in the middle of next year, with the commissioning of the new combined cycle power plant in Iernut, of 430 MW.

The company has also supplied gas to households, but their number is small, being obliged to do so because it was designated, in the past, a supplier of last resort (FUI).

“In order to be able to manage the activities of supply and distribution of natural gas and electricity, both in a competitive regime and under the FUI, it is necessary to adapt the information system to be purchased, in order to ensure the specific functionalities of each type of activity. For example, adaptations of the specific functionalities are necessary for the contracting processes, price calculation, mass invoicing, automatic notifications of managed customers and reporting to ANRE”, the procurement specifications state.

The platform should be able to perform operations for an “unlimited” number of customers.

The delivery deadline for the hardware infrastructure required for the project implementation is 45 days from the signing of the contract, and the platform commissioning deadline is 90 days from the signing of the contract. The company is waiting for offers from interested companies until February 10, which means that, if the procurement procedure does not encounter any obstacles, in the summer Romgaz will finally be able to effectively enter the natural gas and electricity supply market – then the new 430 MW power plant in Iernut will also be operational.

Currently, Romgaz and Petrom sell gas extracted in Romania to household customers and to thermal energy producers for the population at the price of 120 lei/MWh, regulated at this level until March 31, 2025.
