Slow but sure evolution of green cars sales on domestic market at end-April

Sales of hybrid and 100 percent electric cars registered in Romania in the first four months reached 195 units, up by nearly 112 percent compared to the same period in 2015, data released by the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA) reveal.

During January to April 2016, sales of green cars, were equivalent to 0.7 percent of all new cars sold nationally.

Only at April level this year, there were sold 69 green cars, an increase by 32.7 percent compared to the previous month, when there were sold 52 units.

Among the most environmentally friendly car brands marketed from January to April, Toyota ranks first with 116 units (+ 153.2 percent year on year), followed by Lexus (48 units + 200 percent), BMW (8 units, compared to any copies sold in January – April 2015) and Land Rover (7 units, -22.2 percent).

István Jakab, president of the Environment Fund Administration, said that currently, in Romania there are 55 charging stations for electric cars, of which 22 are in Bucharest. Environment ministry promises a program to develop infrastructure for charging electric cars, its stages will be developed until the end of May.

Early this April, a major retailer in Romania, Kaufland, has installed one charging station at its headquarters store in Bucharest (on Barbu Vacarescu Boulevard).

Subsequent stations will be installed in Kaufland store parking lots in Arad, Timisoara, Deva, Sebes, Sibiu, Ramnicu Valcea, Pitesti, Constanta and Bucharest, as well as the A2 motorway.
