The most important financing contract for the railway sector within the National Recovery and Resilience Program (PNRR), in the amount of 8.77 billion lei (EUR 1.77 bln), was signed and involves the modernization of the Caransebeş – Timişoara – Arad railway line, over a total length of 162 km.

The financing contract was signed by the Minister of Transport, Sorin Grindeanu, and the general director of the National Railway Company CFR SA, Ion Simu Alexandru.

“We signed a very important financing contract through PNRR for the modernization of the railway infrastructure! In the amount of 8.77 billion lei, the contract will provide the money for the modernization of the 162 km of the Caransebeş – Timişoara – Arad railway line. All 4 lots of this project already have appointed constructors, and the contracts for design and execution will be signed after the resolution of the appeals”, minister Grindeanu said on his Facebook page.

The four sections of the project are Caransebeş – Lugoj, Lugoj – East Timisoara, East Timisoara – Ronat Triage Gr. D and Ronat Triage Gr. D – Arad.

The sums secured through PNRR will be used for complex works necessary for the development of the infrastructure in the south-west of the country: the doubling of the railway line along the entire route; restoring the lines and correcting the route so that trains can run at speeds of 160 km/h; modernization of railway stations; building pedestrian walkways and adapting the level of the platforms to European standards; the establishment of passenger stops in urban areas, for direct access to the railway transport network; abolishing level crossings or building uneven passages; the construction of two new buildings for maintenance and a regional traffic management center and ERTMS system.
