The prices of arable land in Romania are higher than in France

Romania has high prices for arable land, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) provided today. Thus, the average price in Romania is 8,051 euros/hectare, compared to other states, where it is lower. In Bulgaria it is 7,303 euros, in France it stands at 6,130 euros, Estonia – 5,730 euros, Hungary – 5,240 euros, Lithuania – 5,021 euros, Slovakia – 4,790 euros, Latvia – 4,420 euros, Croatia 3,700 euros.
The level of agricultural land prices depends on a series of criteria, such as national factors (legislation), regional factors (climate, proximity to irrigation networks and systems) and localised/specific productivity factors (soil quality, slope or drainage), INS mentions.
Based on the methodology agreed at European level, in Romania, in 2022, the average price of one hectare of arable land was 39704 lei/ha. The lowest average price was reported in the North-East region, namely 34743 lei/ha, while the highest value was reached in the Bucharest-Ilfov region, namely 59263 lei/ha.
In 2022, an increase of approximately 6.1% in the average price for arable land was recorded in Romania compared to the previous year, with the highest rise being reported for the North-West region of Romania (+23.5%). The average price of permanent grassland experienced an increase of about 6% in 2022 compared to the previous year, for the overall country, with the most significant rise being recorded by the North-East region (+14.9%).
Average prices of agricultural land in the European Union (EU)
In 2022, the average price of one hectare of arable land in Europe experienced significant variations. According to the data available for 19 EU Member States in 2022, arable land prices ranged between a minimum of 3700 euro on average in Croatia and a maximum of 233230 euro on average in Malta. The average price was 8051 euro/ha in Romania.
The average price of permanent grassland in EU Member States in 2022 varied from a minimum of 1887 euro/ha in Bulgaria to a maximum of 46305 euro in Luxembourg, while in Romania the average price was 5671 euro/ha.
