The national energy transporter, Transelectrica, announced on Monday that it has secured a non-repayable funding of over 56 million euros through the REPowerEU component. The funds will be used for the installation of photovoltaic plants and storage facilities at 29 power stations, the modernization of the SMART SA subsidiary, optimization of the communication network managed by the Teletrans subsidiary, and the establishment of a data center.

First of all, the money will be used for the installation of photovoltaic power plants (PVPP) and electric energy storage systems intended for supplying internal services installed in the CNTEE Transelectrica SA stations, with an allocation of 29,557,000 euros. This sub-investment involves the installation in 29 transformation stations out of a total of 81 stations in the power grid of facilities for electricity generation through photovoltaic power plants. The investment is an off-grid project in which the photovoltaic power plants and storage batteries will be used solely to power a portion of the internal services of the stations. This investment aims to achieve a minimum 50% reduction in Transelectrica’s own electricity consumption in 29 stations compared to 2022. Additionally, there will be a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2,610.93 tons of CO2 per year.

The completion deadline is set for June 30, 2026.

Secondly, part of the funds will go to the modernization of SMART SA – a subsidiary of CNTEE Transelectrica SA, the maintenance company of Transelectrica, with an allocation of 18,240,000 euros. This sub-investment aims to equip SMART SA with state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly equipment and machinery to ensure maintenance services at the highest standards suitable for a transport and system operator. It also involves the digitization of maintenance services provided to the national energy infrastructure through the implementation and development of software solutions. Following this investment, a 50% reduction in the average number of intervention hours and the number of interventions is expected.

The implementation of this sub-investment is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2024.

And thirdly, there is also money for the optimization of the communications network and the establishment of a data center – Teletrans SA, a subsidiary of CNTEE Transelectrica SA, with an allocation of 8,440,000 euros. Teletrans SA is the Transelectrica subsidiary responsible for providing communication and IT services.

The sub-investment aims to enhance the cyber resilience of the electricity transmission network and the National Power System by modernizing the communication network (equipment and software) and establishing a data center.

The equipment to be acquired under the project will result in an increase in the technical availability of the optical fiber infrastructure to 99.5%, directly contributing to ensuring the stability and safety of the power system. The implementation of this sub-investment is scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2026.
