Ukrainian company to build plasma medicines facility in Romania

The Ukrainian company Biopharma Plasma is preparing the construction of a factory in Oradea where it will produce medicines by processing plasma, Bihoreanul local newspaper announces. The new facility will cost 37 million euros, and is scheduled to be completed by February 2026.

According to the project submitted to the Bihor County Environment Directorate, the drug production unit will be built on a plot of land with an area of 34,370 square meters and will process 1.2 million liters of frozen human plasma (the liquid component of blood) annually to obtain vital drugs.

The finished products will be Bioven 10% IgG immunoglobulin (of which up to 200,000 50 ml vials will be made in one year and a double quantity of 100 ml vials) and Albuven 20% albumin (up to 1.8 million vials/year).

Initially, the factory will operate with one production line, with plans to expand later to two lines. The human plasma will be obtained from the company’s own blood donation centers, then transported and stored at a temperature of -20°C until it enters the production process.

The pharmaceutical plant site will include a production hall, special warehouses for hazardous substances, laboratories, offices, roads, parking areas, and green spaces.

The technology to be used involves advanced processes of separation, purification, and sterilization, all of which will be carried out under strict quality control. Substances used in the process include ethanol and various other chemicals (acetic acid, sodium, chlorides, urea, sodium caprylate, 2-propanol, etc.), which will need to be stored safely to prevent any environmental risk.

According to the environmental impact report, the project will not have significant negative effects on water, soil, or air, and will include special protective measures to prevent pollution.

Relocated from Ukraine due to the war, the Biopharma Plasma plant is scheduled to become operational by March 2026. Once launched, it will operate continuously, seven days a week.
