World Bank’s ’Doing Business Report 2018’ revealed recently that Romania ranks 45th out of 190 countries, with a total score of 72.87 points, next to Republic of Moldova, in terms of business environment. In other words, the report shows that it’s easier to do business in the neighboring country rather than locally.

”To my surprise, the Republic of Moldova is now a little higher than Romania in terms of the ability of the country and the companies to operate here and to enjoy a favorable environment. The fact that Moldova has a better position than Romania is something that would worry me,” US Ambassador to Bucharest Hans Klemm stated on Friday, attending National Top of Private Companies in Romania Gala.

On this occasion, he pointed out that SMEs are the backbone of any economy.

”They are the source of innovation, they represent the entrepreneurial spirit, they have the power to fail and to learn from mistakes, to rise again to be successful. It’s important to have stability, predictability, transparency, cost-benefit analysis for the measures taken,” the US diplomat said.

Klemm added that when he talked with SMEs representatives in several areas of the country, they told him that the main obstacles they see in the way of development are infrastructure, market access and labor force.
