Christopher T. Hanson, the chairman of the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is paying a visit to Romania next week.

“The US Embassy, with the support of the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest and the National Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activities, hosts the visit of the president of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Christopher T. Hanson to the E2 Center within the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest“, says a press release from the US Embassy in Bucharest.

“The first E2 Center in Europe was installed within the Faculty of Energy, part of the U.S. program Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST). The visit takes place in the context of the strategic partnership between the US and Romania in the field of nuclear energy and cooperation for the implementation of SMR technology with multiple benefits for decarbonization, energy security and access to clean and safe energy”, the press release also adds.
Hanson will hold a press conference on Monday, together with the rector of the Polytechnic University, Mihnea Costoiu, and the head of CNCAN, Cantemir Marian Ciurea-Ercău.
Nuclearelectrica and the American company NuScale concluded a partnership in 2019 regarding the construction of the first small modular reactors (SMR) in Romania, but more and more voices have recently revealed that the project is doomed to failure.
In November last year, the joint-venture company RoPower Nuclear SA, equally owned by Nuclearelectrica, the state operator of the Cernavodă nuclear power plant, and Nova Power&Gas from the E-INFRA group, has announced that the project to build a 462 MW nuclear power plant with small modular reactors (SMR) designed and developed by NuScale in Doicești is moving forward, despite the official announcement of the failure of a similar project in the US by the Americans.
