The jury appointed by the Automotive Press Association in Romania (APAR) has offered 190 points to the new Opel Astra, thus getting ‘the car of the year 2016’ title in Romania.
The new Opel was followed by Fiat Tipo with 145 points and Renault’s new SUV Kadjar with 107 points.
Opel becomes the first manufacturer in the history of the competition, having two consecutive victories, after Corsa won the trophy last edition.
The 2016 Astra has been named a finalist for car of the year in Europe too. A panel of 58 journalists across 22 European countries will evaluate the Astra and six other contenders and name the car most deserving of the award; there are no segments or categories here, just one all-reining vehicle.
The European Car of the Year award was founded in 1964. In recent years, Opel has come out on top twice – with the Insignia in 2009 and the Ampera in 2012. The 2016 winner will be announced on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show on February 29, 2016.
