Romania wants to complete the F16 squad with four more aircraft and has in view over long term the acquisition of other 36 such aircraft, Defence Minister Mihai Fifor has said on Tuesday.
“Currently, we discuss with the Romanian Air Force. We would like to complete the F16 squadron by four more aircraft at the moment. Another projection is for 36 more F16 aircraft over longer term that we have requested the US to inform us on the possibilities to buy them. We are waiting for a reply because you are not going to buy F16 from one day to another,” Minister Fifor said during a press conference held at the MoD offices.
He presented the steps needed for acquiring the F16 aircraft. “There is no negotiation yet. Firstly, you request to find out if there are aircraft available and, if any, what the price is. After that, the negotiation begins. We are waiting for an answer,” Fifor explained.
On the other hand, Minister Mihai Fifor said that the submarine acquisition programme is currently being looked into by the Navy and the acquisition could start after 2020.
“This is a medium and long-term programme. In our opinion, such a purchase could start after 2020 but everything is done through competitive dialogue, because we want things to go as much as possible to the benefit of Romania. Competitive dialogue means maximum transparency, compliance with both Romanian and European legal provisions and, ultimately, we are very interested in the offset of such contracts, such as the one for Corvette, where the offset will be used to modernise the frigates of the Romanian Navy,” Fifor said.
