Despite the record wheat harvest, bread will be more expensive and of poorer quality

Romanian Employers in Milling, Bread and Flavor Industry (Rompan) President, Aurel Popescu, says the price of bread will increase this month, due to higher expenses for the producers of milling and bakery.

“The price of raw material is going up, the same for the expenses with the labour force. The gas and energy suppliers have informed us the tariffs will grow by 25%,” Popescu said, according to ziare.com.

He argues that the current price of loaf is between RON 0.60 and RON 1.30, and some RON 0.20 will be added to the price, for the 300 grams loaf. The increase will be higher for more expensive products.

Aurel Popescu says for wheat matters not only quantity, but the quality.

“Last year we had an almost linear price throughout the year. This year we’ve bought the wheat for RON 650 per ton, now it is RON 850 per ton. The price has increased by approx. 25%. This year’s wheat production is about 10 million tonnes. The domestic consumption is limited, so there are about 5-6 million tonnes for export. The problem is the quality of the wheat. We’ve had rainfall during harvesting, so more than 50% of the crop has been affected in terms of bakery index,” Popescu said.

He added that almost all the high quality wheat will be exported and the poorer quality one will be used in the country. “We have to make bread out the wheat with lower bakery index. We hope our bakers are masters to make good bread out of poor quality wheat,” he added.
