EC’s warning about the announced GEO on the appeal for annulment

The European Commission is closely watching the debate in Bucharest around a potential emergency ordinance on the five-judge panels which will allow people with legal problems to file an appeal in annulment and to thus have their sentences reviewed, reads a EC press release to Ziare.com.

The European body also reminds that president Jean-Claude Juncker has voiced his opinion quite clearly on the risk of amnesty when he was in Bucharest.

As the Commission has repeatedly said, it is crucial that Romania gets back on the track of anti-corruption fight, to ensure an independent judiciary system and to avoid taking steps backwards, the press release further says.

The EC’s official stance comes right after vice-president Jyrki Katainen has commented on Twitter that the announced GEO is “unbelievable news“.
