The national women’s handball team of Romania has qualified to the main groups of the European Championship 2018 in France after defeating Germany 29-24 (14-11) Monday evening, in the second match of Group D.
In the first match Germany defeated European Champions Norway and Romania defeated Czech Republic.
The Romanian team led 5-1 and then 12-7 to finish the first half with a three-goal difference. In the second half, Romania had 20 minutes of excellence, increasing the goal difference to nine goals (25-16 in the 49th minute). The team relaxed for several minutes and Germany closed the gap to 29-24, full time.
Goalkeeper Denisa Dedu defended two 7 metre penalty kicks and was named the best player of the match. Elisa Buceschi scored 11 goals, becoming best goal scorer of this championship up to date.
Cristina Neagu (photo) scored 5 goals and has become the all-time goal scorer in the history of European Championships with 206 goals. The performance was announced by the room’s announcer in the 27th minute of the match, digisport.ro reports.
Cristina Neagu said: “When we play as a team and manage things as teamwork, we have great chances to fight against any national team. Moreover, all matches start from 0-0. Considering this tournament’s results, anything is possible. We have our hope and believe in it up to the very end.”
