FC Steaua football club changes name to FCSB SA

FC Steaua Bucharest, team owned by businessman Gigi Becali, has changed its name to Football Club FCSB SA, the President of the Romanian Football Federation, Răzvan Burleanu, announced on Thursday, at the end of the meeting the FRF Executive Committee which has approved the decision.

In this context, Răzvan Burleanu told the journalists: “If you have questions about the record, I can tell you that the Romanian Football Federation lacks jurisdiction to rule in such a case, it is to be decided by the courts.”

Asked whether the club’s coefficient will be affected internationally, the FRF President said: “We will communicate the name change to UEFA, a decision on their part is expected.”

Football Club FCSB SA will be the name in all documents and competitions of the Romanian Football Federation and of the Professional Football League as of Thursday.

The Army Sports Club Steaua Bucharest sued FC Steaua in 2011, demanding the cancellation of the trademark used by the League 1 team. The Bucharest Court rejected this request on April 17, 2012, a decision upheld by the Court of Appeal on December 20, 2013, but the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) ruled in favour of the army sports club. In 2015, FC Steaua lost the Steaua brand, as the ICCJ dismissed the appeal filed by the team owned by Gigi Becali.

CSA Steaua announced that as of this summer it will enlist a senior team under the name of Steaua in League 4 which will own the team’s record until 2003, while FCSB SA will own the record from 2003 hitherto.

The first match of the vice-champions under the name of Football Club FCSB SA will take place on Sunday on the National Arena, starting at 20.30h, against rivals Dinamo Bucharest in the fourth stage of the League I play-off stage.
