Romania’s youth national team has made a big step towards qualifying to the European Under-21 football Championship in 2019, after defeating Wales 2-0 (0-0) on Friday, In Cluj Napoca, in a match counting for Group 8 qualifying round.
Romania’s goals were scored by Dennis Man (55th min) and George Puscas (71st min – photo). The national team needs only one point in the match against Liechtenstein, on Tuesday, to qualify to the final tournament in Italy and San Marino.
The match on Friday registered the largest attendance ever for the U-21 team, with 12,588 spectators, among them the President of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), Razvan Burleanu, and former internationals Gheorghe Hagi and Gheorghe Popescu.
In the standings, Romania leads Group 8 with 21 points (9 matches), followed by Portugal – 19 points, Bornia-Herzegovina – 18 points, Switzerland – 10 points, Wales – 10 points and Liechtenstein – 0 points.
The last matches take place on Tuesday: Romania vs. Liechtenstein (21.00h in Ploiesti), Portugal vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina (21.00h, Funchal) and Wales vs. Switzerland.
