Former Constanta mayor, Radu Mazare, files for asylum in Madagascar

The lawyers of former Constanta mayor, Radu Mazare, have filed on Thursday, to the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) the certificate of political asylum seeker in Madagascar on their client’s name, document said to be valid for one year. The lawyers have also requested a new term in order to study the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) reply in regard to the involvement of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) in the file Mazare is judged together with Avraham Morgenstern.

“I submit the certificate attesting the request for asylum in Madagascar. I am in touch with Radu Mazare every three days,” the lawyer told the ICCJ.

The court has set a new term on June 7.

Radu Mazare is judged, together with his brother, Alexandru Mazare, and Businessman Avraham Morgenstern in a file in which he is charged of taking EUR 175,000 bribe from Morgenstern, the representative of a company building the ‘Henri Coanda’ real estate campus, in order to support him win the auction and to subsequently increase the value of the contract. Senator Alexandru Mazare is investigated in the file for bribe taking, after allegedly receiving money to favour the same company.

The ICCJ upheld on January 10 the DNA request to issue an arrest warrant in absentia on the name of the former mayor of Constanta, Radu Mazare, after violating the terms of judicial control and leaving for Madagascar. The Supreme Court’s decision was not final.

The former Mayor of Constanţa, was placed under national and international prosecution, after the mandate issued by ICCJ arrived at the General Police Inspectorate (IGPR).

On December 30, 2017 the IGPR announced that Radu Mazăre, who was under judicial control, did not come to the Constanţa Police to sign the attendance chart, the former judge informing the case officer that he is on the territory of Madagascar, taking steps to obtain political asylum.
