Fresh protests against amnesty and pardon scheduled for Sunday in Bucharest, other cities

New protests have been announced on Facebook against amnesty and pardon, scheduled on Sunday at 18.00h in Bucharest’s University Square and in several cities around the country, such as Pitesti, Piatra Neamt, Baia mare, Suceava and Satu Mare.

Another protest is expected in front of the Romanian embassy in Copenhagen starting 17.00h, hotnews.ro reports.

“On Sunday we will all gather as of 18.00h. We start a march at 19.30h,” organisers say.

According to the organisers, in Pitesti the protesters will gather in Vasile Milea Square as of 17.00h and in Piatra Neamt in front of Tineretului Theatre, Stefan cel Mare Square, 18.00h.

In Baia mare the protesters are expected in front of the Administrative Palace – Maramures Prefecture (17.00h) and in Suceava in front of the Prefecture (17.00h).

“The government tried on Wednesday to adopt the emergency ordinance amending the criminal legislation. Our event comes following the repeated statements and signals regarding the alleged amnesty of corruption offences or the changing of some laws without public consultations or without considering the viewpoint of some institutions,” the organisers say.

Almost 4,000 people protested Wednesday evening in Bucharest and in the country – Cluj, Iasi, Sibiu and Timisoara –against the government drafts regarding pardoning some offences and amending the criminal code.
