Romanians’ appetite for holidays has increased travel agencies’ turnover

The turnover of travel agencies last year was RON 2,306 billion, of which ROL 2,067 billion of tour operators and 239,151 million of sales agencies, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The total number of tourists participating in the touristic activities organized last year by tour operators and sales travel agencies was 1,778 million. Of these, 85.6 percent represented the tourists participating in the touristic activities organized by the tour operators.

Most of the Romanian tourists preferred stays abroad. For outgoing, Romanian tourists who benefited from the touristic activities organized by tour operators accounted for 49.1 percent of the total number of tourists who traveled with this type of agency, followed by the Romanian tourists who made domestic tours – 44 percent and foreign tourists who came to Romania – 6.9 percent.

For the tourism activities organized by the sales travel agencies, the outgoing activity accounted for 59.8 percent of the total number of tourists who traveled with this type of agency, the domestic tourism activity accounted for 36.7 percent and the incoming accounted for 3.5 percent.

The Romanian tourists participating in the domestic tourism activities organized by the tour operators mainly chose for the seaside area (51.6 percent), the mountain area (12 percent) and the spa area (4.6 percent).

The largest share in the structure of tourist packages for tour operators’ activity was the accommodation services with 57 percent for the domestic tourism and 45.8 percent for both incoming and outgoing.

The commission charged by tour operators for tour packages was an average of 8.3 percent.
