Temperatures fell Thursday morning in Miercurea Ciuc to minus 0.3 degrees Celsius, the lowest temperature in August in the country. It was also the lowest temperature in inhabited areas on the night of Wednesday to Thursday.
The temperature also fell in other localities in Harghita County: Joseni +0.6 degrees C and hoar-frost, Toplita +2.1C, Odorheiu Secuiesc +5.6C.
Sibiu meteorologist Ilie Mojic said that “it is nothing unusual. The weather will get warmer during the day, but during the night temperatures will stay low.”
Harghita County Prefect, Jean-Adrian Andrei, has recommended to the mayors to begin preparations for winter, given that Harghita is one of the regions where winter comes sooner.
The lowest temperature in Harghita County, of minus 1.9C, was registered in 1980 in Miercurea Ciuc, whereas the highest temperature was of 34.9 degrees C in 1957.
The first snow
Low temperatures have led to snowing and a snow layer of 3 centimetres in Pietrosul Rodnei Mountains (2,100 metres) on Wednesday.
Borsa mayor Sorin Timis said that lately temperatures during the day have reached 36C, but on Wednesday morning the temperature fell to 6C, whereas at high altitudes to 0C.
“I don’t recall snow in August, I believe it is for the first time when it snows during the summer. Pietrosul Peak is full of tourists during the summer.”
