The Prosecutor’s Office upon the High Court of Cassation and Justice announced on Saturday that military prosecutors have been notified ex officio and opened a criminal file on the intervention in force of the gendarmes during the Diaspora rally in Bucharest on Friday night.
The Territorial Military Prosecutor’s Office upon the Bucharest Military Tribunal will collect all complaints filed to the Police sections, and all criminal complaints will be registered under a single number. The Press Bureau of the Prosecutor’s Office upon the Supreme Court will inform the public opinion on this case as investigations are going forward.
The Romanian Gendarmerie spokesperson, Marius Militaru stated that Bucharest prefect, Speranta Cliseru had ordered gendarmes to come in heavy. Speranta Cliseru was prefect of Ilfov (2013-2014) and worked at the Voluntari Town Hall, where mayor is Florentin Pandele, the husband of Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea.
While he was working at the Voluntari town hall, Speranta Cliseru was public administrator and executive director. She also was parliamentary adviser in Gabriela Firea’s cabinet when she was senator during 2012-2013.
The Romanian Gendarmerie said the intervention order has been given by the Capital prefect on Friday at 23:00hr, arguing “gendarmes have been hit with stones”. According to the Gendarmerie, 33 people have been taken to the police sections and eight criminal files have been opened. A weapon has been stolen from the female gendarme attacked by the protesters, gendarmes said.
The Gendarmerie representatives told a press conference held on Saturday morning that their intervention has been fully justified and that troops and the means have been sized according to the violent actions, which have been “eminently defensive”, while the actions have been “responsive”.
“I have seen extremely violent people-452 people have been medically assisted, and 70 of them have been taken to the hospital, including 11 gendarmes (…) Authorities will not tolerate such attitudes and will not be passive. We established the force to gradually intervene, as compared to the violence,” Marius Militaru said.
