Octogenarian pensioner wins Romania’s lottery big prize worth almost EUR 300,000

The lucky lottery ticket played at a local agency in Targu Jiu, the capital city of Gorj county (southwestern Romania) has been won by….a 84-year-old woman, who is living alone in an apartment in the city. Liliana has bought one ticket for just RON 4.90 and filled it in with the help of the female cashier who works there.

Liliana went to the lottery agency on Sunday, hoping to earn some few hundreds lei to help her great granddaughter who is left to work in the UK as a nurse.

The old woman has been employed as a worker at the Electroputere Craiova plant for 30 years and she has now a RON 900 pension.

I won some RON 30 last year and I thought maybe I am lucky. I went to the lottery office, I chose some numbers at random and I filled in a simple version. I was hoping to win four numbers, not more, to cover the expenses made by my great granddaughter with renovating my apartment and to bring her back to Romania to take care of me. I stayed without heating all winter long, for I could not afford with my pension…” she said, confessing she had wept for joy when she heard about the earn.

In her turn, the lady cashier seems to bring luck to the players, as it is not the first time she has handed in lucky tickets before, for instance she was working when somebody bought a winning ticket worth RON 42 billion in Gorj county.
