Ombudsman has been notified ex officio on Friday over the case of a woman found dead in the courtyard of „Al. Obregia” Mental Hospital in Bucharest. The Ombudsman will probe if the Constitution has been violated, namely articles 22, 34 and 50 on the right to life and to physical and mental integrity, the right to health care and protection of disabled people.
The woman found dead in the Obregia Hospital’s courtyard had been gone missing six days from the unit, was 63 years old and was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The woman had been admitted to the hospital voluntarily, but she used to flee from home frequently.
The woman had been admitted to Obregia Hospital on July 22. A doctor saw her on July 26, establishing she was malnourished. The patient had been hospitalized to the same hospital three times two years ago, in February, June and October. Her family complained that the woman used to frequently flee from home and drink alcohol.
The woman talked on the phone with the members of her family on August 2, at 14:00, using a doctor’s phone. After an hour, she went to undergo treatment and announced the nurse she was going out in the courtyard to smoke and had been gone missing ever since.
On Wednesday, policemen found out her body in the hospital’s courtyard. Prosecutors have opened a file for suspicious death.
